Your database exists on one machine. That machine dies. Your service disappears with it. You may also need more copies for geographically distributed reads.

Solution — Replication

Maintain copies of data on multiple nodes.

 → Replica A
 └→ Replica B

Core idea: replication maintains multiple copies of data for availability, durability or read scaling.
